Coaches Comments...

Coach Ricca...Woods vs. Green Acres - The Varsity Girls met up with the ladies from Green Acres for the second time this season.  This time the fight was not as tough.  The girl’s came out victorious again with a 41 -28 win.  The first half was competitive and intense.  We were only up by a few points at half time.  But the girls really picked up the pace and shut down the Green Acres team in the second half.  We played aggressive defense and went for steals and any loose ball.  We scored points off fast breaks, driving to the basket and offensive rebounds.  Eight girls contributed to the 41 points scored by the Woods.  Carlotta led the team with 15 points.  Katherine had 8 points and Lindsay had 6.  Elizabeth had 4 points under the basket and Annalise, Izzy, Madison and Lexi all contributed a basket for 2 points.   What a great start to the season, 7-0!

Coach Ricca... Woods vs. Westminster - The Varsity girls are really making their games interesting!  They pulled off another close game, beating a competitive Westminster 31-28.  It was a tough game.  Westminster had three great players and had a huge height advantage over the Woods.  We dealt with that problem by boxing out and being aggressive under the basket.  Lindsay, Elizabeth, Madison and Lexi played strong underneath the basket at the 4 and 5 positions. We put on our full court press in the 2nd quarter and really troubled their strong ball handler who ended up turning the ball over a number of times.  We took advantage of fast breaks and moved the ball well in our offense.  The fourth quarter was a back and fourth game and again the Woods had a two point advantage with less than a minute left.  The girls played smart and tried to control possession.   Westminster tried to stop the clock with fouls.  It came down to Woods having the ball with three seconds left.  Katherine was fouled and was at the line with 1 second left. She made her first shot to make the score 31-28.  This gave us a big advantage and Lindsay sealed the deal with a huge rebound as the buzzer went off.  Katherine lead the team with 13 points, Carlota scored 6, Lindsay and Izzy scored 4 and Zoe and Lexi contributed with a basket each.  Another great win!

Coach Ken... Woods vs. Westminster - What a game....On Wednesday the Woods Academy varsity boys team played Westminster at the woods academy in what turned out to be a great game. Woods won in overtime by four points. Westminster got off to a good start and led most of the game before the woods academy came from behind to tie the game at the end of regulation on a free throw by Ryan Sheehan.  In overtime the game went back and forth until again Ryan Sheehan went to the line and made two free throws to give woods the lead by four with seconds to play. It was another great game from Amara who led the way. Reilly and Nicholas were also huge contributors to the win.

Coach James... Jan. 24, 2013 - The final score was 22-10, with LAB winning the game. At half-time the game was tied. Shortly into the third period, LAB was ahead and went on to win the game. The owls played a great game, and they led it in rebounds and steals.

Jan. 22,2013.
The final score was 19-13, with WES winning the game. The Owls started the game with a 2-3 zone defense and ended the game with a full court press. WES dominated rebounds, while the Owls dominated on steals.  What's important, is that our Owls gave it their all, and they battled to the end!  Thanks for all of the support the families and the friends of our players.

Coach Washington...Woods vs. Green Acres - The quick nitty- gritty on the Woods Academy win vs. Green Acres 29-12.  The 1st quarter of the game was close, 6-2 Green Acres! The second quarter proved to be different, the Owls out ran and juiced up the pace for the remainder of the game. #23 for the Green Acres was a very aggressive player who what determined to drain the jump shot....he was obviously the star of his team. We had to act fast to put a stop to his offensive shenanigans.  In a crucial time out, the boys were advised to settle down and run their plays. The Owls made a totally expected push in the second half. " I am truly proud of the boys for their hard work and dedication." TEAM" Together Everyone Achieves More!  What's next!? NPS @ NPS, looking forward to another challenge.

Key Stats: Woods shot 14-34, def/off rebounds 12-15, a total of 13 steals.

Key Players: Ugo 6/12, 1 blk, 6 rebounds, 1 steal; David Gem 4/8, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 blk; Ify 3/4, 5 rebounds, 3 blks, 2 steals

Coach McCauley... Woods vs. Green Acres - The mighty Owls JV A girls team started the game in a full court press!  Within minutes, it was evident that Green Acres could not handle the intense and aggressive play that the press allowed. Megan was on fire, making 4 out of 5 baskets, scoring 8 points. Mauve has the great ability of seeing the court well... which explains how she was able to get two steals in the game. Georgia and Inez led the team with three steals each. The girls passed the ball with precision in this game to create many easy scoring opportunities. Thanks to Sidra, Megan, and Lily, we were able to dominate the boards even though that had two taller players. Job well done!

Important team stats: A total 13-30 shots, 13-9 def/off rebounds, 5 assist, 1 blk, 14 turnovers and 20 steals the score 26-9.

Scorers: Megan (8), Gracie (2), Nicole (4), Margaret (2), Briana (4), Sidra (2), Mauve (4)

Coach Parker...On Wednesday, January 23 the Girls Varsity B team traveled to the Sheridan school for their 4th game of the season. It was a tough game, coming off a long weekend. The girls played another great game on the defensive end, holding the Sheridan team to only 18 points, but the teams offense struggled to get started, scoring only 5 points for the game. Molly Grant had an outstanding game on defense and Camile Toner shut down Sheridan's top scorer in the second half. Monday, January 28 the girls travel to WES for a 3:30 start time.

Coach Ken...

Against St. Pats...Woods varsity boys played their first home game of the season against st Patrick's on Tuesday afternoon. It was a good effort from all the boys as woods prevailed. Amara lead the way again but also playing well were Charlie, Nicholas and Reilly. It was a great team effort on defense as well that contributed to the win. Ned, Chris and Ryan also contributed. Next Woods is off to the Georgetown Prep Tournament.

Coach Ricca...
Against St. Pats...What a game! The varsity girls pulled off a big win in double overtime against St. Pat’s. They left it all on the court. It was a close game from the beginning but the girls held strong and didn’t let fatigue stop them. In the second overtime Woods had the lead with 25 seconds. We passed around the perimeter trying to hold the ball until time ran out. St. Pat’s fouled Katherine with 15 seconds left and she sealed the game, making both of her foul shots. St. Pat’s had one last opportunity to get a shot off but we were smart and didn’t foul, the shot did not fall and we clinched the game 40 – 36. Katherine led the team with a season high 21 point and some clutch foul shots. Carlota scored 15 and Izzy contributed 4. It was a great team effort, offensively and defensively!

Against Green Acres....The Varsity Girls continue their winning streak with a 37 - 22 victory over Green Acres. The girls played hard. We ran a triangle-two defense to attempt to shut down Green Acres' star player and top scorer. It was successful. Carlota and Izzy wore her out and cut down on her attempts to the basket and second chance rebounds. Sarah and Zoe took over the job for part of the second half and continued to keep her from taking over the game. We had 6 girls contribute with points but everyone played as a team. Carlota lead with 18 points, Katherine had 7, Annalise and Mary had 4 and Sarah and Lindsay had 2 points. Our jump shots were not falling because of the tough rim so we adjusted the game plan and scored most of our points on transition. We did a great job looking down court for the fast break. Another great game!

Go ahead and carve up the master piece:
Taken their talents to Norwood (JV Girls B team)
Down by 2 points in a "hostile" arena with only five minutes left. The cheers on the Norwood sideline reached a fever pitch. Coach A paced the sidelines wondering why he agreed to take on this pressure packed assignment.  The 5th and sixth grade players looked at Mr. A., hoping he had some secret knowledge assuring them a victory. (They owls had lost their earlier game to WES: A great first game in which they lost to a team with an excellent point scorer) They desperately wanted a win against a worthy opponent, Mr A debated faking an injury and letting one of the Woods parents take over. (But that would be the cowards way out) Instead, he asked his players who thought they could steel the ball and was not surprised when every single player (all 16) raised there hand. "Ok"', he said, "We will just keep the same five players in the game". The Norwood coach had been having trouble with the high intensity press the Owls had been using for the entire second half. Although this coach wanted to prevent turnovers he knew that the Wood' girls were too quick.
............The whole game went into a surreal state of slow motion. For the remainder of the game it was almost impossible to know who was winning, or even, which team possessed the ball. The pace was frantic but time seemed to slow down.  Only 30 seconds left and the scoreboard showed the Woods girls ahead by a score of 14-12. What had actually transpired was anyone's guess. Tenacious defense and an intense will to persevere had put the Owls ahead for good.  The final analysis is up to historians and pundits. But victory was sweet.

.
Coach James.... JV B Boys vs. WES: The final score was 19-13, with WES winning the game. The Owls started the game with a 2-3 zone defense and ended the game with a full court press. WES dominated rebounds, while the Owls dominated on steals. What's important, is that our Owls gave it their all, and they battled to the end! The next game is on Thursday at LAB, and I'm sure the energy and effort from Tuesday's game will be evident at this one.  Thanks for all of the support from the families and friends of our players.

From Coach Ricca...
The Varsity girls pulled off a big win against a talented Stone Ridge team. Both teams played tough defense and ran their offenses well. It was a close, back and forth game starting from the beginning of the first quarter. The Woods' girls held strong. They saw the court well and looked for the open man. We hit some tough jump shots and took it to the basket to draw the foul. The girls made many of their foul shots which was the deciding factor in the 22-21 victory. Stone Ridge put on the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter but the Woods girls kept their composure and captured another victory making their record, 3-0. It was a true team effort. Mary and Katherine both scored 6 points to lead the team contributing points from the foul line. Carlota had 5 point with a big 3 point shot. Izzy scored 4 points and Annalise contribute with a basket. Way to play tough Varsity Girls!

From Coach Parker...
Girls Varsity B Game vs. Norwood on 1/8: The game was our first of the season and it was a total team effort. Norwood didn't score until the 3rd quarter and by that time we had already built a 12 - 0 lead. The team defense, full court press and the team rebounding is what kept Norwood from scoring very much. The final score was 14 - 4. The girls were very aggressive and showed great intensity.

From Coach McCauley...
The JV A team girls had two great games this week. We won games against Norwood and WES. Both games proved to be a bit of a challenge for the girls, especially in the beginning of the games.
Norwood started the game with great intensity but could not withstand The Wood defensive pressure, we won the game 24-17. Sidra Swift was the high scorer of the game with 7 points. Ines Andres and Margaret Maloney lit up the basket for 6 points each. Lily Montemarano was not afraid to get in the mix, grabbing 4 rebounds on offense and 2 defensive rebounds. Gracie Yang led the team with 3 assist, while Briana led the team with 5 steals. The score of 16-4 against WES does not reflect the actual game, it was a dog fight. WES was extremely aggressive and strong on defense. Had WES made the shots they took, the score would have been different. WES took 19 shots in the first half of the game, not making any of them. The half time score was 6-0, Woods. Our girls settled down in the second have and got down to the business of winning the game. Briana Lantuh led the team with 6 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 assists. Lily Montemarano led the team with 4 rebounds. This was a great defensive effort by all of The Woods players.

From Coach James...
Yesterday, the Owls JV B basketball team opened their season playing against WES basketball team. The kids were anxious to play this first game as we traveled to WES. The game was a hard battle and we came short of winning by 5 points. Overall, the kids had a great time experiencing a competitive game and are pumped about their next game. There was great effort from all players, but the players of the game are Patrick Gaul and Alex Bender.

Final Score 16-21.
