From the coaches...

Coach Ken...

Against St. Pats...Woods varsity boys played their first home game of the season against st Patrick's on Tuesday afternoon. It was a good effort from all the boys as woods prevailed. Amara lead the way again but also playing well were Charlie, Nicholas and Reilly. It was a great team effort on defense as well that contributed to the win. Ned, Chris and Ryan also contributed. Next Woods is off to the Georgetown Prep Tournament.

Coach Ricca...
Against St. Pats...What a game! The varsity girls pulled off a big win in double overtime against St. Pat’s. They left it all on the court. It was a close game from the beginning but the girls held strong and didn’t let fatigue stop them. In the second overtime Woods had the lead with 25 seconds. We passed around the perimeter trying to hold the ball until time ran out. St. Pat’s fouled Katherine with 15 seconds left and she sealed the game, making both of her foul shots. St. Pat’s had one last opportunity to get a shot off but we were smart and didn’t foul, the shot did not fall and we clinched the game 40 – 36. Katherine led the team with a season high 21 point and some clutch foul shots. Carlota scored 15 and Izzy contributed 4. It was a great team effort, offensively and defensively!

Against Green Acres....The Varsity Girls continue their winning streak with a 37 - 22 victory over Green Acres. The girls played hard. We ran a triangle-two defense to attempt to shut down Green Acres' star player and top scorer. It was successful. Carlota and Izzy wore her out and cut down on her attempts to the basket and second chance rebounds. Sarah and Zoe took over the job for part of the second half and continued to keep her from taking over the game. We had 6 girls contribute with points but everyone played as a team. Carlota lead with 18 points, Katherine had 7, Annalise and Mary had 4 and Sarah and Lindsay had 2 points. Our jump shots were not falling because of the tough rim so we adjusted the game plan and scored most of our points on transition. We did a great job looking down court for the fast break. Another great game!

Go ahead and carve up the master piece:
Taken their talents to Norwood (JV Girls B team)
Down by 2 points in a "hostile" arena with only five minutes left. The cheers on the Norwood sideline reached a fever pitch. Coach A paced the sidelines wondering why he agreed to take on this pressure packed assignment.  The 5th and sixth grade players looked at Mr. A., hoping he had some secret knowledge assuring them a victory. (They owls had lost their earlier game to WES: A great first game in which they lost to a team with an excellent point scorer) They desperately wanted a win against a worthy opponent, Mr A debated faking an injury and letting one of the Woods parents take over. (But that would be the cowards way out) Instead, he asked his players who thought they could steel the ball and was not surprised when every single player (all 16) raised there hand. "Ok"', he said, "We will just keep the same five players in the game". The Norwood coach had been having trouble with the high intensity press the Owls had been using for the entire second half. Although this coach wanted to prevent turnovers he knew that the Wood' girls were too quick.
............The whole game went into a surreal state of slow motion. For the remainder of the game it was almost impossible to know who was winning, or even, which team possessed the ball. The pace was frantic but time seemed to slow down.  Only 30 seconds left and the scoreboard showed the Woods girls ahead by a score of 14-12. What had actually transpired was anyone's guess. Tenacious defense and an intense will to persevere had put the Owls ahead for good.  The final analysis is up to historians and pundits. But victory was sweet.

Coach James.... JV B Boys vs. WES: The final score was 19-13, with WES winning the game. The Owls started the game with a 2-3 zone defense and ended the game with a full court press. WES dominated rebounds, while the Owls dominated on steals. What's important, is that our Owls gave it their all, and they battled to the end! The next game is on Thursday at LAB, and I'm sure the energy and effort from Tuesday's game will be evident at this one.  Thanks for all of the support from the families and friends of our players.
